Language & Literacy Narrative

Reading is closely related to interest

From the moment you were born learning to speak, to walk, to feed yourself is a learning process. Do you agree that a person’s life is a process of continuous learning?

As I sit quietly by the window and think of all the books I’ve read over the years, scenes of remembrance come to me. I was born in the countryside of southern China. I have lived with my grandparents since childhood. My parents work in the city, and they usually go back to their hometown during the Spring Festival. My family planted a seed to study hard in my heart since I was young. But as I was a kid, I was very playful and the neat fonts on the book make me feel bored, I can’t bring up a bit of interest. So my grades were not good. When my parents found that my grades were very poor, they also thought that my grandparents might be too old to help me with my studies, so they took me to school in the city. My new way of learning began.

When I went to school in the city, I found that my classmates were studying hard. For the first time, I felt the atmosphere of learning, as if they were fascinated by books. Once before lunchtime, I was so hungry that I could eat a horse. I asked my classmates to go to dinner together. I said, “It’s lunchtime, girls, let’s go to dinner. I could eat a horse. Hello? Are you listening to me? Oh, my God. Aren’t you hungry? ‘I called them as I approached them. But they look like they’ve been bewitched. I called several times. They didn’t hear me because they were reading. I began to wonder what the magic of books can make people forget time and forget hunger. So I borrowed from them the book they had read. It was a fairy tale called “Three Little Pigs.”. When I open the book, I am attracted by the pictures in the book. So I began to try to read the book slowly, but I still seem to have a lot of words I don’t know. With the help of my classmates, I know that this story is about three little pigs fighting with wolves. I feel the pleasure of reading for the first time. When you have not finished reading a book, you will be eager to know what interesting plot will happen next. When you finish reading, you will feel the wonderful plot in the book or praise the intelligence of the characters in the book. Therefore, I gradually fell in love with reading. I like to immerse myself in a sea of books. It was as if the dull words had become animated elves, and their dancing in the book had become meaningful stories. This feeling makes people feel good and fulfilling. I would weep for the characters’ misery, I would be indignant at their darkness, and I would exult over their happy ending. Interest is indeed the best teacher. Because I read a lot of books, my writing improved by leaps and bounds. I copy the good sentences from the book into a notebook, which I can use when I write. I sat in my classroom as usual on the summer day when the sun burned the earth. When I received the report card, the teacher gave me a smile and said “great progress, continue to work hard.” Like a breeze blowing into my heart. I looked at my improved grades, felt the sound of cicadas outside the window seem not so annoying, they seemed to be cheering for me. The corners of my mouth smiled up uncontrollably.

This is my third year in the United States. I found that people here are very fond of reading, whether in the crowded subway or leisurely park you can see people holding books. As my native language is not English, this has caused great trouble for my reading. It seems hard for me to get back the joy of reading. I also want to read books in different languages. But I can’t find a book that fits me. Fortunately, when I was in high school, my teacher recommended a book called “Freak the Mighty” to me. I love this novel very much, Kevin has a birth defect that causes him to wear leg braces and use crutches. Max is learning-disabled and is big for his age. Therefore, Both characters have limitations. Together they overcome these limitations. Kevin is able to get around better with Max’s help. Max Begins to enjoy researching the different “quests” of the two Friends (which else question to conquer his learning disability). Together they have many adventures. The biggest “adventure” of The book happens when Max is kidnapped by his father. Kevin saves Max Through the help of a squirt gun full of “acid.” The sad thing is that Kevin dies because of his birth defect. Kevin has not lived in vain, though. Max vows to write down the stories of their adventures. It is this vow that marks the creation of this book: Freak the Mighty. I was deeply moved by their friendship and their strong will not to yield to fate.

When I like a book, I read it over and over again. Every time I find something new in it, it increases my vocabulary. If I come across a word I don’t know, I look it up in the dictionary. But as I read it more and more, Gradually I became familiar with the word. I love reading, and every book is a soul in black and white, so long as my eyes and my reason touch it, it comes to life. Reading not only brings pleasure to my life, but also broadens my horizon. There are people and things in many places that I haven’t been to in the real world, but I can feel them through books. Reading can not only improve my writing ability but also be of great help to my study. I can also make many friends through books. I think we can read our favorite books on campus together with friends who have the same hobbies. We can discuss the plot and guess the ending of the story together. It’s going to be a wonderful thing. When I’m upset or stressed, I like to read quietly by myself. I threw myself into the sea of books as if all the troubles of reality were far away from me. My mind and body felt relaxed and fulfilled. When I finish reading a book, I am as eager as a hungry baby to find my food, and my food is the book. The power of words is strong and wonderful, it can be like a sharp knife to judge the evil forces in life, it can be like a kind mother’s hand to smooth your day’s fatigue, it can also be like a friend to accompany you to give you the advice of life.
